Travel Tips
Transport: Everything in the Centro Histórico a walking distance. However, if you find yourself needing to take a taxi to Bocagrande or wherever you can easily grab a cab or an Uber to get anywhere you want safely. Just make sure you ask the price of the trip before you jump in a cab.
As you walk the streets of the Centro Histórico, sometimes you will find guys dropping beats and freestyle rapping about you and your friends as you walk by. If you are interested in hearing an impromptu song about yourself, be sure to have some cash on hand to give them a tip. Don't be shy to say "Sorry, maybe next time!" or "Quizas despues!" or be like Tricia and walk the other way when you hear the radio playing!
You will come across street vendors trying to sell a range of food, drinks, and souvenirs. Make sure you negotiate a good price and pay in cash.
The iconic women dressed in colorful outfits known as "Palenqueras", will accept a propina (tip) for a photograph, or you can just buy some of their exotic fruits you've never heard of, like lulo, granadilla, etc., and they’ll let you snap a picture with them.
There is no shortage of people trying to make money. They can be fairly persistent at times, so either say “no, gracias” very clearly.
In the islands, try to take cash with you since the ATMs charge high fees or sometimes there aren't any "cash out" options on the islands.
